Abstract
The soil of Denmark's west Jutland provides very little organic evidence from prehistoric sites, but extremely degraded organic material (leather, wood, thread and bone) from a Viking grave was preserved for study under the microscope through consolidation by a two-component epoxy resin. Developed for dry remains, the technique has also been used on degraded wet profiles, and gives a microscopic picture of the original cross section of the excavation.
