Measuring selected elements in a piece of furniture (intervals, thick nesses, etc.) may help determine the units of length (centimeters, different inches) used by the carpenter and help in determining the date and provenience of the particular item. This is illustrated with detailed examples. In England the inch was equal to 25.40 mm, in Prussia to 26.15 mm, in Paris to 27.07 mm, and in Vienna to 26.43 mm. -- AATA
