Abstract
Archaeological discoveries of slag heaps and slag blocks in different parts of Europe are detailed and their distribution mapped. The remainsindicate the reduction of ores in shaft furnaces with a sunken hearth. Early sites indicate that furnaces were not equipped with a side opening for tapping off slag. Sites are related to outcrops of ore and iron produced in peat-rich areas is found to be rich in nitrogen. -- AATA
