Abstract
The effectiveness of ammoniacal citric acid with added inhibitors for the cleaning of corroded iron artifacts is tested. A solution of 5% di ammonium-citrate with 0.08% 2-mercaptobenzotriazole was found most suitable. The objects to be conserved are placed into a warm solution (60-70°C), which in addition must contain a piece of tin foil of a size equivalent to the object. After the cleaning, the object is stabilized by the removal of the tin foil, the reduction of the bath temperature to below 60°C, and raising of the pH value of the solution to 9.5 by the addition of ammonia.
