Degreasing and subsequent rust-free storage of steel bullet molds are described. A questioner states that oil or grease prevents a mold from casting good bullets and suggests degreasing by wiping with denatured alcohol, soaking in chloroform for 45 minutes to 1 hour, then dipping in acetone or perchlorate of ethylene. After use, when cool enough to be held in the hand, the questioner suggests a silicone spray to protect from rusting. The author responds that the degreasing method suggested by the questioner is effective but presents health and fire hazards. Dishwasher detergent is cited as more effective with the machined steel blocks wired to a rack in an automatic dishwasher and allowed to go through a full wash cycle. Also, the blocks can be boiled for several minutes in dishwasher detergent then rinsed with hot water. The author suggests storage with vapor phase inhibitor (VPI), available as treated paper or in powder form. Success is indicated with VPI when objects are enclosed in well closed plastic food bags. -- AATA
