Mössbauer spectroscopy is summarized and its potential in the identifica tion of the variety of iron corrosion products found in different environments is outlined. The technique complements more conventional methods of analysis of corrosion products but its capacity is illustrated by the identification of gamma-Fe₂O₃ and Fe₃O₄ which are difficult to distinguish by x-ray diffraction but which are readily resolvable by Mössbauer spectroscopy. -- AATA
