Microscopic, chemical and x-ray techniques were used to examine slags from an extensive ancient mining site in the Persian Gulf area. The experimental results indicated that the samples were pieces of tapped slag and furnace slag from a production of copper matte. Such copper mattes could have been smelted in furnaces similar to those used during the Roman period in Timna, Israel. -- AATA
