According to the author, the formation of warty corrosion is due to cuprous chloride. This kind of corrosion must be left undamaged -- since otherwise the cuprous chloride comes in contact with the humidity in the air causing new corrosion -- or must be removed to the pure metallic core and completely cleaned out.
