The use of gold in jewelry is traced from early civilizations to the present. The karat-system of gold alloy identification is described and the melting ranges, hardnesses, minimum elongations, and annealing temperatures are tabulated. The ternary alloy system gold-silver-copper is discussed and a ternary diagram is presented which details the colors of the various alloysystems. -- AATA
