Abstract
Aurelian Ilie and his wife Judit have worked on decorative elements in numerous building restoration projects in the Washington, D.C., area. Their work on marbleizing columns in the newly restored Union Station is highlighted: the preparation of the plaster support, the ground coat, the marbleizing, the glaze, and the use of brushes or other applicators. The classical-style ceiling ornamentation was accomplished with a computer-generated pattern. Repair of columns at the former Commercial National Bank was necessitated by the fact that the original work was done at an improper temperature; the Ilies filled the cracks and prepared a finish to match the original color and patterning. Several other projects are briefly mentioned.
