Abstract
The article describes metal finishing procedures employed in 1933 in the Boeing plant, Seattle, WA. All metal airplanes were being constructed by Boeing at that time, and all metal parts passed through the finishing shop before being used. The equipment in the finishing shop, including spraying booths and ovens, cadmium plating facilities, anodic treatment room, and paint shop, are described. All steel parts are cadmium plated to prevent corrosion. Duraluminum and aluminum go through an anodic process as an anti-corrosive measure. Anodization, which involves passing a current through a chromic acid solution containing the metal part, is described. In effect, anodization begins the oxidization process, then arrests it, leaving a protective oxide film on the surface. The color changes to silver gray. Military and commercial planes receive the same attention.
