Abstract
Industrial equipment lubricant users in Canada typically use spectroscopic oil analysis to measure increased levels of wear metal particles and thus monitor the condition of hydraulic systems on plant and mobil equipment. This monitoring approach does not determine overall levels of contamination within a hydraulic system because particles larger than 5 microns are not analyzed. Based on data presented in the article, it is suggested that sediment testing of used hydraulic fluid samples be used to supplement spectroscopic oil analysis of wear metal levels. Along with monitoring of water content and changes in viscosity, such an approach will help identify existing or developing problems related to effective filtration, maintenance practices, oil service life, or potential component failure.
