This note describes the sandblasting of a fountain in Washington D.C. made by the Statue of Liberty's creator, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. The fountain is cast iron, with concrete lining of the larger bowl. A complete cleaning and reassembly of the fountain was in progress at the time the note was written. Sandblasting has been used for cleaning and paint removal for over 100 years. On cultural relics, the treatment should be as gentle as possible. For sandblasting, the effect on the metal depends on particle velocity, particle hardness, particle size, particle shape, angle of impact, nozzle size, working distance, and dwell time. Dwell time, or the amount of time spent on a particular location, is probably most significant, which implies that great care should be taken in evaluating the operator and the techniques to be employed. Specifications for the sandblasting of the Bartholdi fountain are presented, along with a brief account of how they were selected.
