Abstract
This article focuses on two sherds from Evreti, a site adjacent to Kouklia Village, Cyprus. The two sherds date to the 14th and 13th centuries B.C., and purportedly belong to different styles, one ( Minoan Lady ) thought to come from the Greek mainland and one ( Rude Style ) universally accepted as of Cypriote manufacture. Neutron activation analysis was carried out at Lawrence Berkeley Lab to evaluate the possibility that the two sherds pertain to a single manufacturing center. A brief discussion is provided of compositional variation in ceramic clays and some of the special problems encountered on Cyprus. On the basis of considerations of 18 individual element concentrations, it is concluded that both sherds were probably made in the same location as a larger group of MycIIIC: 1 sherds from Kouklia. The 2 were found to differ greatly from MycIIIC:1 sherds from Enkomi. Heterogeneity is noted in the analyzed sherds from Kouklia, and it is uncertain whether all were made locally. The authors tentatively suggest the chemical heterogeneity in the Kouklia sample reflects use of diverse local clay deposits. In any case, the evidence is fairly strong that the Minoan Lady sherd was not imported from the Greek mainland.
