The author describes the preservative and aesthetic motives for cleaning; various types of concretions and subconcretions that accumulate in different geographical regions, on different substrates, and in different physical orientations are considered. Water cleaning, chemical cleaning with acidic or alkaline cleaners in combination with surfactants, brushing and low-pressure spraying, and abrasive blasting with dry grit or glass beads are discussed mentioning their relative effects.
