The Freer Gallery of Art conducted a test of a non-aqueous deacidification spray for paper developed and marketed by R. D. Smith. The spray is based on magnesium methoxide in methanol solution with a freon propellant. The test was based on approximate surface pH checks using indicator crayons, and exposure to light to induce possible color changes in the following papers: Permalife, Xerox paper, FGA notepaper, white cardboard, and newsprint. The tests were inconclusive.
