A comprehensive and detailed study of the insect pests that infest and attack books. This work discusses the insect pests of books in North America and Europe, as well as other regions, when appropriate. It discusses the various materials of book construction and offers specific and illustrated descriptions of the winged and wingless insects classified as book pests. The discussion of each insect includes its Latin name. For many insects, the common American, French, German, and Spanish names also are given. Each discussion includes a thorough description of the insect's immature and adult stages, geographical distribution, time of emergence, feeding habits, and length of life cycle. The type of book damage caused by the insect is discussed in detail, often illustrated. This work discusses the proper environment for books and specifies ways of preventing insect attack on them. It offers advice for the control and elimination of the insect pests of books. A bibliography, an index of Latin names, and indexes of common English, American, French, German, and Spanish names for all of the insects discussed conclude the work. Insect identification is possible by comparing damage and fecal pellets with illustrations; methods of dealing with infestation are described.
