Abstract
In the past centuries an interesting method was used by Venetian glass makers to opacify and color their glass in the range of colors from lemon-yellow to brown. This method was based on adding the so-called anime to transparent glass already molten in the pot. The anime were glassy, opaque, colored products prepared separately by a process involving several stages; the opacifying and coloring constituents of the anime are lead stannate and lead antimonate, which are also found in ancient glasses of Roman and pre-Roman times. A thorough investigation has been made of about 40 Venetian manuscripts of the 18th and 19th centuries, in which 92 recipes for anime have been identified. Following the recipes found in the manuscripts, a series of anime have been prepared on a laboratory scale in accordance with the methodology described; the results were successful and x-ray analysis revealed the presence of cubic lead stannate and/or lead antimonate. Further meltings have revealed that, if Murano glassmakers had had tin oxide and antimony oxide available, they could have prepared their anime in one single stage without having to make initial calcinations to produce the stannate and antimonate.
