Turner's work on the durability of glass, and on ancient glassmaking, are discussed in the light of recent developments in these subjects, and a link is developed between the production of colored glass in medieval times, the characteristics of the northern type furnaces, and the distribution of beech forests 1000 years ago. In both cases some remaining problems are pointed out where further studies are required by other workers in these fields. -- AATA
