Abstract
Recipes for varnishes and for the cleaning of oil paintings are drawn from the literature before 1700. Representative and unusual examples are given, including some varnish recipes antedating the introduction of oil painting. It is clear that the art of cleaning paintings was still in its infancy beyond the time at which varnishes based on soft resins in essential oils were introduced.
