Abstract
Radiocarbon dates from a sedimentary sequence from Toshmaidan, Kashmir help determine the date of the last deglaciation in the Himalayan region. Organic deposits from which a pollen sequence had been obtained had been suggested to postdate the last deglaciation, with the subsequent climatic development paralleling other postglacial sequences. Seven radiocarbon dates from six of eight pollen stages fall in the range 9650 - 15,250 B.P., showing that the organic deposit accumulated long before the neolithic. A more recent date (2790 B.P.) was obtained from a deposit separated from the rest of the sequence by a disconformity. These dates for the beginning of organic deposition confirm that deglaciation was in progress at this location between 14,000 and 15,000 years ago, and agree broadly with dates for the beginning of deglaciation at similar elevations elsewhere.
