Abstract
This article summarizes studies of the fumigant Vikane (sulfuryl fluoride) intended to assess its usefulness in a museum environment. The studies focused on the effects of Vikane on materials used to construct objects of artistic and cultural value, including cellulose and lignin, proteins, pigments and dyes, synthetic and natural resins, and metals. At 10x the drywood termite dose for 20-22 hours, no detectable changes were found in several synthetic and natural resins or in the pigments lead white, ultramarine, malachite, azurite, curcumin, or alizarin crimson. A surface tarnish layer about 200-300 angstroms thick containing traces of chlorine was found on sterling silver, copper, bronze, brass, and iron. Some chemical changes were noted in paper. A variety of fibers showed a large drop in average polymer length after accelerated aging. Protein interaction with sulfuryl fluoride were difficult to detect. In general, it was felt that the potential effects of Vikane on the materials are small in comparison to the potential damage from insect infestation.
