Large scale restoration of the churches in Goa was carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1964-65 to save the fast deteriorating structures of stone and wood with murals, canvas and panel paintings and wall decorations, inside and outside. A part of this work involved application of fresh gold leaf where the gilding had flaked off. While removing the old gilding, a study was made of the old technique of gilding and the fresh application was done with a method resembling the old technique as closely as possible.
