A shipwreck off Cape Gelidonya, Turkey, dating from approximately 1200 B.C. , yielded 30-kg ox-hide shaped Cu ingots. A fragment from one ingot was broken to obtain 3 pieces for analysis. The significant im-purities were 10% Fe and 0. 2% Co. There is a 2nd phase present containing substantial amounts of S with lesser amounts of Fe. The composition suggests the source was a covellite ore which was not properly roasted, and which was later fluxed with Fe₂3O₃. The absence of ingot grain structure indicates that the material was poured in the slushy state. The evidence suggests the possibility that the ore came not from Cyprus but from southeastern Turkey. There have been numerous finds of ox-hide ingots in the sea but museum curators and excavators are reluctant to furnish solid metal samples for destructive analyses. -- AATA
