Abstract
During archaeological research work which has been carried on since 1958 by a DDR expedition in the Sudan, the method of making latex impressions was introduced for documentation in Egyptology. This method may replace the old paper impressions method. Under tropical conditions, the natural rubber latex has better mechanical properties. Latex impressions are almost inured to the hazards of transport, and permit the making of plaster casts. Three to four applications are usually sufficient to obtain a solid layer. For a 2 m2 area, about 1 kg. of latex is needed. A technique is described for rock paintings which employs a pigmented latex layer over the drawings, followed by normal latex. Thus, the rock painting is fixed in color within the finished imprint. R.Ã.B. -- AATA
