Abstract
15 samples of painted plaster from material of the recent excavations at Mycenae which were found in or near the House of the Idols and the Temple and are dated to the 13th century B.C. were analyzed. 3 samples of raw blue pigment and one sample of raw red pigment from the excavations by Schliemann were also analyzed. 4 of the samples of painted plaster were polychromatic so the total number of pigment samples analyzed was 26. The methods of analysis used were x-ray fluorescence, x-ray diffraction analysis and mineralogical microscopic examination. The red, yellow, brown, and orange pigments are Fe<sub>2O3</sub>, FeO (OH) . nH O or mixtures of both. All of the blue pigments were identified as Egyptian blue, Ca Cu Si<sub>4</sub>O<sub>11</sub>. The black pigments were not conclusively identified because they consist of a light element which could not be determined with the method of x-ray fluorescence used and they are non-crystalline and opaque. -- AATA
