Abstract
The restoration of <i>The Fall of the Damned by Dieric Bouts, executed by Albert Philippot from 1969 to 1971, was necessary due to paint blisters, surface bloom, and some opacity and spots due to previous restorations. The treatment consisted first of a local setting down of the blisters with a very dilute acidified gelatin glue; this process was carried out several times until a satisfactory penetration was obtained. The cleaning was begun on the unblistered areas. To remove the varnishes, an iso-octane ethyl alcohol mixture was used; a layer of stiff animal glue was removed with a dilute solution of ammonia (7%).
