The author investigated the present states of screenand panel-paintings at 6 temples and one castle in Kyoto. The scaling phenomenon was generally found on the chalk-painted areas without exception. Some areas painted with vermilion showed networklike cracks which were considered to be in the synthetic resin film previously applied. Also some flaking areas were observed on the part painted with yellow ochre and red ochre. The wood-panel painting showed dam ages attributable to the glue and alum size, and the surface was covered with layers of blackish brown stains as if they had been burned. The network-like cracks on a painting which were attributable to the restoration treatment made before 1953 were found only on the part painted with pigments of fine particles (vermilion, pale malachite, etc.) Great care should be taken during the restoration treatment for chalk, vermilion and yellow ochre. -- AATA
