Abstract
Describes the general development of ceramic technology in ancient China, and in particular the high-fired glaze invented in the Shang Dynasty. Analysis of the early glazes and possible raw materials used in the Shang Dynasty indicate that the origin of high-fired glazes lies in the use of wood ash or a mixture of wood ash and clay. -- AATA
