Abstract
Presents the results of a typological and technological study of painted gray ceramics found widely distributed throughout eastern Iran, southern Afghanistan, and central and southern Pakistan during the third millenium BC. Whereas the ceramics formed two distinct stylistic types produced by separate cultural groups (the Faiz Mohammad and the Emir groups), they were technologically similar. Mentions the neutron activation analysis which was used to determine the number of sites producing the gray wares and the directional flow of their distribution. Describes binocular examination, emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and analysis with the electron microprobe. -- AATA
