Abstract
In chalk-raised paintings on Japanese sliding doors, the central part of the raised area has often shown flaking while the edge of the area has not. A model showed that the coarser particles of chalk remained in the central part of the raised area, whereas the finer particles together with relatively large amount of glue solution spread outward and a clear solution exuded even further outward forming the outermost region. The area was thus divided into three regions; adhesion is strongest at the outermost region. The mechanism of cracking and flaking is discussed. K.T. -- AATA
