Abstract
Items received at the Canadian Conservation Institute often fall into several areas of conservation discipline. Consequently, they can be placed in one of several laboratories for treatment. The Ethnology Laboratory, for example, treated a number of musical instruments of Eastern manufacture. A Chinese <i>gu</i> provides a case study of the dilemma faced by Western conservators in treating objects of Eastern origin. Consultations with conservators in the fields of paper, fine arts, and furniture, combined with the input of an ethnomusicologist, revealed a curious combination of approaches to this one object. -- AATA
