A brief account of the hollow dry lacquer technique as used in China is followed by a detailed description of the examination and restoration of a seated Buddhist figure described as being Song dynasty. The removal of six layers of later paint (ranging in date from probably Song dynasty to 19th century) revealed a well-defined black lacquer surface with traces of original decorative color. The treatment was carried out using Western traditions and materials. -- AATA
