The paper presented by Newcomer <i>et al.</i> (1986) is commended for its aims and some of its criticisms of use-wear analysis but there are methodological misconceptions which undermine the conclusions of the article. As the problem arises from a lack of explicitness in microwear analysis, some discussion of both problems in interpretation and observation are presented with a detailed system for recording microscopic wear variables. -- AATA
