Abstract
The <i>shoin-zukuri-type buildings containing screenand/or wall panel paintings in 13 temples and one castle in Kyoto were investigated. The previously-treated paintings in <i>Diago ji, Nishihongan -ji and Tenkyu-in temples showed damages to paper supports and flaking of pigment layers and gold foils. Generally speaking, paintings in rooms in which air freely entered and people frequented were more damaged. In contrast, where the public visitors were not so many, and where proper temperature and humidity were maintained and sufficient shading from direct sunlight was provided, the wall paintings were in very satisfactory condition after repairs. -- AATA
