It has been noticed that some screen and wall panel parntings in many <i>Shoinzukuri-type buildings show cracking and flaking of pigments. The author measured the temperature and humidity throughout a year in <i>Shoinzukuri-type rooms. The most desirable environment for the conservation of screen and wall panel paintings is considered to be a relatively low temperature, and a relative humidity ranging from 55 to 60%. The place should normally be kept rather dark, but can be made lighter for viewing. -- AATA
