This paper presents evidence that at least one ancient Egyptian scribe was illiterate. The evidence consists of mistakes made in copying the twelfth division of the funerary book of Am-Tuat. This book is always written in reverse, that is, from left to right. The scribe who copied one known version of the book evidently did so in the normal order, from right to left. Several instances of left over symbols from the bottom of one column were place at the top of the next column to the left, which was in fact the previous, not the next column. Since this error occurs several times, it is obvious that the scribe did not understand what he was copying.
