The AATA supplement consists of three annotated bibliographies covering articles on wood, carbohydrate, textile, polymer, and paper chemistry, and research on long-term stability of paper, cellulose-based textiles and ethnographic materials. Topic I reviews a number of intrinsic (as opposed to extrinsic) factors that govern the rate at which acid causes cellulose fibers to break down, principally the factors arising from differences in crystallinity and from differences in the chemical structure of hemicelluloses and oxidized cellulose.
