Drones, small aircraft about 3.5 m long, have been developed for military aerial surveys, but can be equipped with photogrammetric instruments. The drone makes possible photography from a stable altitude and from set geographic directions. After positive experiences with this technique, a drone was used to survey the excavations at Xanten in northwestern Germany.
