The five day CCI workshop was held in late August at the Northern Studies Centre in Churchill, Manitoba. It was designed for conservators who deal with collections of Inuit skin clothing and artifacts. Instructors were Jill Oakes and Rick Riewe, from the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, and Elizabeth Ningoarsi and Leah Okatsiak of Arviat, Northwest Territories. The scraping and other techniques shown reflected the methods from the west coast of the Hudson Bay. However, participants could also try techniques and tools used in areas from Greenland to Alaska. The workshop provided useful information concerning choice of skins, preparation techniques and how they may lead to deterioration, as well a the identification of native repair techniques and wear patterns on skin clothing.
