Abstract
The use of sugar as a substitute for other solids, e.g., polyethylene glycol (PEG), resins, etc. for conservation of waterlogged wood is described. The method is simple and energy efficient. The antishrink efficiency (ASE) is measured for both small and large objects. Variation of treatment conditions intervals of boiling for 3 hours and soaking for 24 hours in the sugar solution at a temperature range between 30°C and 90°C, permit optimization of the method. The hygroscopicity of treated objects under conditions of high humidity is a problem that needs further investigation.
