A wide variety of fatliquors possessing special ingredients, find application in the fatliquoring of leathers. These special ingredients confer specific porperties on the resultant leathers. While the complaints on spue formation, greasy spots, etc. are mostly overcome by making use of these special fatliquors, the industry, at times, finds if difficult to meet the standard specifications, as the fatty components get fixed to differennt types of leathers in varying magnitudes. Quite often, the footwear and leather-goods manufacturers too experience hardships due to poor adhesion, imperfect moulding etc. owing to the tilt in the ratio of free oils and fats to fixed fatty matter in favour of the former. A sytematic study was, therefore, conducted to process leathers using fatliquors of different origins and different types and to study the free oils and fat-contents as well as the fixed fat-contents in the leathers obtained enabling the industry to choose the typical fatliquor composition to meet the specific requirements as stipulated in the standard specifications.
