Abstract
This is a continuation of the work reported on in the same journal in 1966, in which impregnation of paper with carboxymethyl cellulose wet-strength resin combinations increased the paper's pH, its strength, and its aging characteristics. This paper deals with the modification of a mimeograph machine for impregnating the sheets, more extensive testing of the process, and a reversible method of encapsulating the documents with polyethylene-coated Mylar film. The mimeograph process involves laying the document on the drum of the modified machine, turning the machine through six revolutions, and peeling the document off by hand. Encapsulation with the polyethylene-Mylar combination is said to be superior to cellulose acetate because of the substantially lower permeability of the former. The use of these materials is said to be made reversible by insertion of sheets of cellulose acetate film between the document and the Mylar. The exact technique of this process is not made clear.
