The Dance Notation Bureau (New York) houses wide variety of documentation on dance and movement. It takes many years to produce a final, definitive dance notation, so every phase of a score, at its various stages of completion, must be preserved as if it were the final stage. It may be the only copy in existence. There are four main groups of paper records: pencil on foolscap; pencil on graph papers of varying acidity, often with pressure-sensitive or rubber cement additions; various printing inks on various papers; typewriter carbon copies. Preservation microfilming and systematic photocopying have begun. Before microfilming, an archival paper photocopy is produced; this master is used to prepare copies. Problems of environmental conditions remain but there are hopes for a repository outside new york. There are also hopes for computerisation of dance notation so that on-going corrections need not be made by hand. -- ICCROM
