A map, drawn in Venice in 1424, found in England after World War II, is in the authors's opinion the oldest known map showing the east coast of North America. The geographical names on the map correspond to those in the old Norse Vinland sagas, but are translated into Italian. The middle part of the chart is identical with the America shown on the Cantino map of 1502, and the so-called 'Admiral's (i.e. Columbus's) map' of 1513. All maps of America drawn in the 16th century have an east coast which, in the author's opinion, is taken from the 1424 chart - with two additions.
