Abstract
The North Atlantic Historic Preservation Center, National Park Service, describes technical aspects of the restoration. It selected two kinds of stainless steel to replace the corroded wrought iron support system. A ferritic and austenitic alloy, Ferralium 225, was used for flat bars and bolts; 316L stainless steel, extra-low in carbon, for armature bars. Teflon tape replaced asbestos as insulation between tough pitch copper saddles and the steel. Other measures reduced water penetration. The article discusses interior paint removal and exterior patina. It also notes where original wrought iron bars and copper saddles were left in place for future study. -- AATA
