The right side of the Cagliari Cathedral is almost completely covered by calcium oxalate films. The film characteristics are similar when the film is found on different types of stone (limestone, marble, volcanic rock). The presence of silicon in the whole film suggests this hypothesis: the films originate from the surface treatments (called <i>silicatizzazione</i>) used in the early 20th century.
