Abstract
This is a very complete review of the effects of acidification on corrosion of materials in the atmosphere, soil, and water, based on 70 well-selected references and on the practical experience of the author. The article contains a valuable, brief synthesis of metallic corrosion with special regard to problems encountered in the tropics. However, the title is not fully borne out, since the more special questions interesting cultural property are disposed of in one sentence on page 177: Monumental buildings and statues of stone, stained glass windows, paper, leather, paintings, museum textiles and archives are subject to accelerated deterioration from acid deposition. -- AATA
