Abstract
Passive and active methods of care are described. Recommendations about minimum standards of environmental control, though no optimum values of relative humidity or oxygen concentration can be given. Appropriate physical protection in storage and during handling is suggested. After discussing the advisability of active intervention, the preliminary stages of evaluating the object (its current state, its original state and its desired state) are outlined, together with an evaluation of the methods available and the likelihood of success. Documentation at each stage is stressed. Various methods of cleaning (mechanical, water washing, solvent washing), reshaping, repair, and restoration are covered. -- AATA
