Breakdown of roofing timbers to woolly fibers is increasingly reported in the Sydney area. The anatomy, moisture content, chemistry, environment, and possible biological association of such defibered wood is examined. Defibering appears to be the result of thermal degradation in the presence of salt accumulations.
